Ameneh Bahrami, a young engineer in Iran, had acid tossed in her face leaving her disfigured and blind. She has had 17 surgeries with more to come. She will never regain her eyesight and has had an eye completely removed.
The obsessive stalker who did this to her is about to be blinded by having acid dripped into his eyes as part of his criminal punishment.
Despite needing financial help with her medical care, the victim has refused blood money in recompense and demanded this Hammurabic punishment instead. She believes her attacker will eventually kill her unless he is also blinded and she also believes this punishment will deter other men from acid attacks.
The crime happened in 2004 and the Iranian appellate court upheld the sentence of blinding this past month. The punishment is legal under the Islamic Sharia code of Qias or equivalence, which allows retribution for violent crimes.
The man has confessed. Ameneh Bahrami and many others witnessed him maim her as she walked home from work. There is no doubt he tossed the acid in her face. The sick fuck still wants to marry her and doesn't believe he did anything wrong.
Commenting on his sentence: "They must also completely empty out her eyes, since I'm not sure that she cannot secretly see," he said. "The newspapers have made this a huge case, but I haven't done anything bad."
He obviously doesn't get it.

I have no problem with her demand that he be blinded, but I am a raging asshole who thinks Bush and most of his flunkies should be executed for war crimes and Bank CEOs should be shot.
How many murderers and rapists in the United States would think twice if their actions carried comensurate costs like Hammurabi's Eye for Eye?
For more information about the crime and Ameneh Bahrami's thought process, CNN - Woman blinded by acid wants same fate for attacker and Iranian to be blinded with acid for doing same to woman. CNN also has a video interview where they take her to the site of the attack. Washington Post - Woman Blinded by Spurned Man Invokes Islamic Retribution.
Remember that several Afghanistani girls were attacked with acid last month for going to school.

I'd probably be more inclined to favor surgical removal of this guy's eyes, rather than acid, but that's probably because despite some of the rumors, I'm not Evil.
Maybe it does send a message that would scare future perpetrators, but some have a nutty I-fought-the-law-and-the law-won type attitude. Where does this come from and how can this be stopped? Would he, even blinded, still be an anti-hero to some?
Ameneh Bahrami is probably pretty powerless. Hell. Domestic violence victims here in the states are pretty powerless let alone a woman in Iran. Having her attacker blinded is probably one of the few things she can do to exert herself and claim some justice.
Her attacker is nuts, but as I read more today about acid attacks it seems his brand of crazy is pretty common. Reject me and I will make you so ugly no one else will want you.
The pictures are shocking. Some of the ones in the article MB linked to are even worse.
I expect another flurry of news coverage when the blinding is carried out.
It's good to read you again. rated
Ameneh Bahrami does not and this is what she said about it in one of the articles:
"'Of course, only blind him and take his eyes, because I cannot behave the way he did and ask for acid to be thrown in his face,' she said. 'Because that would be [a] savage, barbaric act. Only take away his sight so that his eyes will become like mine. I am not saying this from a selfish motive. This is what society demands.'"
"'I am not willing to get blood money from the defendant, who is still thinking about destroying me and wants to take my eyes out,' she told the court. 'How could he pretend to be in love? If they let this guy go free, he will definitely kill me.'"
